Given the long stretch of heat since spring and the lack of rain, many of the plants at Caraway are surviving the summer only with a little help. Okay, a lot of help. We’ve lost a few plants that were not yet well established, but a crew of dedicated volunteers is watering to keep things alive and doing a great job of it.

Thank you volunteers!

Well, Caraway, it’s been another great school year, with new habitat projects completed and a great focus on being green at school and at home. It’s been a delight being part of such wonderful changes and new outdoor learning opportunities for our students. Caraway’s Green Team continues with Richard Fowler at the helm, and he’s got great ideas for our beautiful habitat. Continue giving your support and volunteering to help — like our native plants, our environmental projects have room to grow, and it will take a team! I move on to middle school with my son, but you might still see me from time to time at Caraway.

Have a fantastic summer, everyone — be sure to get outdoors and enjoy nature. Take a hike, and I mean that literally! Don’t forget your reusable water bottle, hat, and sunscreen!

For their Earth Day project and environmental badges, our Caraway Girl Scouts took shovels, trowels, and rakes in hand to redo their shade garden at school with native Texas and drought-hardy plants.

It looks wonderful, and it’s a perfect sister garden to our butterfly-hummingbird habitat! Thank you to all our Girl Scouts, their troop leaders, and their parents who worked so hard on this outstanding garden bed.

New Garden Markers

We have new labels identifying the plants in our garden. Take note of the symbols showing which plants are Texas native, herbs, or drought-hardy non-Texas plants. And then look at the symbols showing the wildlife value of each plant.

Hummingbird = hummingbird favorite
Butterfly = great plant for pollinators
Cardinal = plant provides seeds or berries that birds enjoy
Caterpillar = plant is a larval host plant for butterflies/caterpillars

Also, be sure to visit our sensory garden in the habitat. Such wonderful smells to smell, and more!

Just in time for Family Dinner night and the work on our habitat, an Eagle Scout and former Caraway student created a new garden for our back door area, complete with rain barrels. It looks lovely, and it’s nice to officially have our first water barrels. A big thanks to the Eagle Scout and his family and fellow scouts who helped beautify our school!

Snow at Caraway!

Winter snow came our way today, a rare treat for the Austin/Round Rock area. But it was lots of fun for the students!

The trees caught a bunch of the snow, and what was left on the ground was quickly snatched by eager hands during recess and after school.
